What is the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There is a very fine line between the two Therapies. In very general terms, Counselling can be shorter term and works in the here and now. Psychotherapy can be longer term and looks for links to past experiences to change ingrained patterns of behaviour.

How does Hypnotherapy work?

Imagine the mind floating like an iceberg in the north sea. The conscious mind is part of that iceberg that we can see above the water. About 10% of the whole, 90% of it is hidden beneath the waves.This 90% is our unconscious mind. In our day to day lives, We do not need to have permanent access to everything in the unconscious. There is so much stored in it that it would just confuse us. Every now and again though, we delve into it to remember a face or a name from the past. Have you smelled a fragrance or heard a piece of music that tugs at your memory and transports you back to the past? That is your unconscious mind.

The Hypnotherapist will take you to a relaxed state - similar to the state you are just before sleep. In this state of mind you can access your unconscious. The Hypnotherapist will have already spoken to you about your issues and the feeling associated with them. Under Hypnosis your unconscious mind will absorb suggestions that are aimed at improving your life by changing the way you react to certain stimulate.

You will never do anything that you would not agree to in waking state.

How many sessions of Hypnotherapy will I need?

It depends on the problems you want address. For fears and phobias - say fear of flying of fear of creepy crawlies - then only 2 or 3 sessions would be the norm. For weight loss it can take up to 3 or 4 sessions. Stop smoking will generally take 2 sessions.

How many sessions of Counselling or Psychotherapy will I need?

This may not be apparent at first. It depends upon the issues involved, and each client will progress at a different pace. Some of the work will be long term and will need courage and commitment to see the process through, but in the long term your life can improve dramatically.

How will I know therapy is working?

The contract that is formed in the beginning will be re-visited regularly so that you can check on your progress. I am there for you at our set times and you can talk to me if you have any doubts.
